NGH - Proposed Share Issue

National Golf Holdings has recently written to shareholders of the Company with a proposal to issue up to 250 shares over an extended period of time, commencing with an initial tranche of up to 80 shares (comprising 30 x A class shares and 50 x C class shares). The proposed issue, combined with the 92 shares which were issued in 2019, will restore the subscription and other related revenue associated with the ongoing attrition of 3A members since the time of the merger in 2015, and into the future.

The National has always been progressive and aspirational and the Board recognises that the replacement of that revenue is not only prudent, but will also play a critical role in our ability to maintain and grow the offering for members, particularly in relation to the timing and scope of contemplated major works and other strategic initiatives.

We encourage members to vote on this important opportunity. The revenue associated with the new shares will help us continue to drive the Club’s current momentum, build on our strength, and position the Club to take advantage of strategic opportunities as they arise.

Corporate shareholders should note that they need to use their corporate details to access online voting, rather than their individual membership details.

The Special General Meetings of National Golf Holdings Limited will be held at the Clubhouse of The National Golf Club, The Cups Drive, Cape Schanck on Sunday 26 March 2023, commencing from 3:00pm.

The National Tournament

Tournament Schedule

We are only weeks away from hosting The National Tournament.

The National Tournament, presented by BMWi is the season-ending tournament of the 2022-23 PGA Tour of Australasia and will be held on the Moonah Course at Cape Schanck.

This fully-sanctioned event is likely to play a role in determining the Order of Merit for the 2022-23 season, including exemptions for future tour play. The weekend coverage of The National will comprise 8 hours’ coverage across each of the Foxtel, Kayo and Spark NZ platforms, with full coverage of the final group on Sunday.

Members are encouraged to take this opportunity to watch some amazing golf on their home course. The 17th and 18th holes of the Moonah Course will be set up as a 'spectator hub' with opportunities to purchase food and drink from a number of local vendors out on course. Of particular focus will be the 17th hole which will include CBCo Brewery set-up and the opportunity for the professionals to win a BMW, should they score an ace.

Please note the following schedule for the week:

  • Monday 27 March - Practice Rounds
  • Tuesday 28 March - Practice Rounds
  • Wednesday 29 March - Pro Am
  • Thursday March 30 - Sunday April 2 - Tournament

Moonah Course closed from Monday 27 March to Monday 3 April

Gunnamatta Course closed Saturday 1 April & Sunday 2 April

Volunteers

As host of The National Tourment, we are seeking approximately 120 volunteers to assist with a range of tasks across the four days to assist the professional conduct of the tournament.

A primary objective of our involvement with the PGA Tour is to use the platform of this event, and particularly the weekend broadcast, to showcase Cape Schanck and our courses to local and international audiences of golf (and general sports) fans. Our ability to recruit a sufficient body of volunteers is critical to the success of the tournament and the quality of that broadcast.

In return for your time and assistance, you will receive a tournament shirt, refreshments and the best seat in the house. Volunteers will also be given priority entry into the Pro-Am event on the morning of Wednesday March 29, with any residual Pro-Am places being offered by ballot to the broader membership.

Please note that the Gunnamatta course will be closed on the weekend of The National Tournament, with (member only) play limited to The Old and Long Island.

If you can help please lodge your interest via the following link or email National member, Jan Bayley, at thenationaltournament@gmail.com

Player Billeting Opportunities

The Club is taking expressions of interest for billeting players participating in The National Tournament.

Many of the professional golfers participating in the event are self-funded, meaning travel and accommodation drain their financial resources.

If you have space and are willing to support a player during the tournament, please contact: Brett Nelson Operations Manager, The National Golf Club, Email: brett.nelson@nationalgolf.com.au

Around the Club

Gunnamatta Works - 1st and 18th Holes

The changes to Gunnamatta have now been completed. The 1st retains its par rating and the 18th hole becomes a par 5, making the course par for Gunnamatta 73.. The early feedback received from members indicates that the first hole has lost nothing of its previous appeal, and may have even taken a step forward. Most feedback has been focused on the 18th hole, with overwhelming support for the changes that have been made and how it will play for members of all standards.

We must thank our Golf Course Manager, Leigh Yanner, and his team for their support of Tom Doak and the Renaissance crew. Within little more than a week, the existing 1st green had been excavated, and the foundational work relating to the relocated 1st green, 18th hole teeing grounds, and shaping of fairways had been completed. An additional bunker will also guard the left line into the 17th hole, and the vegetation further left of that will be expanded to further encourage play out to the right-hand side of the 17th fairway.

The Club is endeavouring to have the full course playable by Good Friday.

Long Island - Water Security

With only months to go before the OCM renovation of Long Island commences, the Club has taken a major step forward in terms of water security with the announcement of its partnership with the State Government, South East Water, and Frankston City Council which will ensure a regular supply of recycled water to Long Island from late 2024. Additionally, recent drilling at Long Island has identified a bore near the old bowling club green which will produce a strong flow rate of good-quality groundwater. Water is the lifeblood of any golf course, and it is a source of great relief to know that all four of The National’s courses are now effectively drought-proof.

A member presentation will be scheduled for later this month at Long Island to answer a number of questions relating to the OCM project and the impact that it is expected to have on members at an individual level. More detail in relation to that event will be advised closer to the time.

A copy of the media release from South East Water can be found here.

Booking of Carts

To further improve Member experience, members will be able to pre-book carts at both Cape Schanck and Long Island. The booking of carts as required will ensure availability for Members and Guests.

Bookings can be made by clicking on the + symbol underneath your name on the booking sheet, or by phoning Golf Operations.

Members wishing to use a cart without having made a prior booking will still be able to do so, but this will be subject to availability.

K9 & Dine

Our inaugural K9 & Dine event provided a great opportunity for members to combine two of their primary passions. Our furry friends behaved with perfect manners on the night and have earned themselves a future invitation as a result.

Dress Standards

The National Golf Club expects all members and guests to be dressed appropriately when attending the Club. Introducing members are at all times responsible for the attire of their guests. To avoid embarrassment guests must be informed of the dress code prior to attending the Club.

The Club has instructed all staff to enforce and manage the dress code and their judgement as to the suitability of attire shall be considered final. Please adhere to their requests without objection. Note that more formal attire may be required for specified events.

A copy of these standards can be found here.

The National Invitational

Monday 6th March was the first day of the National Invitational when 130 women from 5 states across Australia participated in our 3 day event at The National Cape Schanck courses.

The Cape Schanck trophy is an individual stableford event played on the Old course and this years winner was Kathy Naoumidis from Keysborough playing off a 7 handicap with 42 points. Kathy had 6 birdies in the round and as she said at the presentation “It was her best ever round of Golf”.

The players enjoyed Welcome drinks and canape after play on Monday, getting to chat with players from all the other clubs. Tiffany Cherry from Golf Australia was our guest speaker and she spoke about the commitment and vision that Golf Australia has for women in Golf.

On Tuesday the National Invitational Teams event was played on the Gunnamatta Course,in conjuction with The National Cup which is the best combined individual stableford on Monday and Tuesday. Kathy played well again to win the National Cup with a total of 72 points.

The Teams Event, best 3 scores of the 4 players was won by the team from Burleigh on the Gold Coast with a total of 110 points. High winds (35- 40 km) were a feature on the day but many players seemed to relish the conditions with many scores over 36 points.

Two eagles were also a feature on the day, one was Karen Richardson holing out her approach shot on the 3rd. Karen went on to win 2 NTP’s (5th and 16th) , the one on the 5th 10 mm from the hole. She won the Bronze Individual stableford event with 41pts. The other was Debby Smith from Keysborough who eagled the 15th hole .

As Jan Edgar from Burleigh said in her acceptance speech, they don’t play in the wind, the cold or in carts so it was very different from their normal club golf – they were very excited to win this event as the past two years they had been unable to attend due to COVID restrictions.

The Presentation dinner was held on the Tuesday evening and everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet selection from our extraordinary chef and food and beverage team.

8:30am on Wednesday morning all players teed off on the Moonah Course for the Lady Nelson Bell – a 4BBB stableford event. Again the weather was cool and windy however the rain stayed away until everyone was inside enjoying lunch.

The team from Portsea , Jenny Roberts and Glenda Edmonds won the day with 41 points. They had lots of fun “ringing the bell”.

One of the teams emailed following the event “We felt very privileged to have been part of this experience and thank you for all that you did to make this experience a very memorable one. Your attention to detail, your very helpful committee and volunteers before getting on course and then when out on course was exceptional.

The success of the event over the past eight years has made The National Invitational a very special event and in high demand for players to attend.

We especially want to thank everyone who was involved, especially the volunteers on course who definitely enhance the experience for the players. For many players the National courses (and the weather) are a much more difficult challenge than normal but they all embrace the experience.

Full results and photos are available on the Invitational website.

Drainage Issues - Long Island Practice Fairway

The team at Long Island has been busy working hard to improve some of the drainage issues that we have had on the Practice Range.

In total over 160m of drainage was installed which will improve conditions in our wetter months.

Long Island - Practice Range

A number of subtle changes have been made to the practice facility at LI with the aim of affording greater protection to residential properties on the right-hand boundary. The ropes on the tee are now angled away from that fenceline, and the flag placements have shifted generally to the left.

Additionally, the fencing at the rear of the range has been extended to the left, reflecting the expectation of additional ‘traffic’ being directed to the left half of the range. We would ask all members to be aware of this risk and, to any extent that is reasonable, be making a conscious decision to err left from that teeing area.

Care for Course - Bunkers

Whether we like it or not, bunkers are a part of our wonderful game, and despite doing our best to avoid them, it is inevitable that we will all end up in them from time to time.

To assist in maintaining the best possible conditions within our bunkers, players are reminded to:

  • Enter/Exit from the appropriate area of the bunker.
  • Properly rake bunkers and where possible, smooth the face of the bunker if you have disturbed this with your shot or whilst entering/exiting.
  • Leave the rake in the bunker in the correct position (in the middle of the bunker with the handle parallel to the direction of play).

It is the responsibility of all players to care for the courses. Members are responsible for ensuring guests comply with course care requirements.

Check out this blast from the past from Richard Quested, which highlights the importance of raking the bunkers and how to leave them once you have finished playing your shot.

Thank you for your assistance in taking care of our wonderful courses.

The irrigation design has been finalised for Long Island and will go out to tender in the next couple of weeks

The design has two separate pumping stations, one for the greens and one for the couch surfaces . This will allow us to irrigate the greens with either potable water or bore water . The fairways irrigation is a hard edge design, this means no water will be applied to the roughs . This will provide definition and avoid water wastage

A Step Back in Time

Introducing the Heritage Committee

Although not an old club by international standards, The National already has a rich and colourful history. Recognising the need to properly capture this information, the club formed a Heritage Committee several years ago.

Beavering away in the ‘hidden’ archive room (next to the downstairs board room), committee members have been gathering, identifying and sorting the many items of memorabilia collected over the years. This has been (and still is) a labour of love involving many hours of sifting through documentation and identifying events, people and dates. This then needs to be digitised involving scanning and enhancement. To make this easier in the future the Club has invested in some IT software that will immediately capture and sort today’s activities which are the history of tomorrow.

Once the majority of the many photographs we have in store have been digitised, we will need help with identifying many of the people and events. To do this we are hoping to have a series of events (late afternoon/evening) when members with good memories can get together and we will screen the photos for identification. On this same note we would welcome any memorable photographs or items of memorabilia that members would be willing to donate to the Club. Photographs must be of high clarity enabling them to be digitised.

As an example, here are some photos from our collection. We know it is taken at the Presentation Dinner in 1990. Can any member help identify the people and what the presentation is for?

During February we ran a daily competition on the Members Instagram Page @ngcmembers which required our members to guess various holes. Below are a few photos of the original work carried out when constructing The Old Course. Can you guess what these holes are?

If you are able to share any answers to the photos above and below, or to find out more information about the Heritage Committee please email heritage@nationalgolf.com.au
