The National Tournament
The National Tournament Summary
Tom Power Horan took out the inaugural National Tournament with a stunning 19 under par score over four rounds on the Moonah course. The course was picture perfect for the TV coverage and feedback received over the weekend from the PGA and the viewing public has been unconditionally positive. Eight hours of coverage on Foxtel, Kayo and Spark NZ over the weekend showcased aerial imagery of the landscape and highlighted the superb quality of our courses.
A big thank you to our volunteer army, that exceeded 100 people, with the majority drawn from within the membership. That team was ably led by National member, Jan Bayley, who has an extensive history overseeing the volunteer aspect of tournament operations.
It will come as no surprise to National members that the final stretch of holes, from the 16th, played as the three hardest for the pros across the tournament, with the 5th hole (par 3) the next hardest by the ratings. For a summary of total scoring by hole click here.
Around the Club
Long Island - Member Presentation
Planning for the Long Island renovation remains on track with much of the current effort going into (flood) modelling work with SEW and finalising vegetation offset details. Everything is set for soil to be broken in September of this year.
All members are invited to a presentation at Long Island from 6:00pm on Wednesday 26 April. The session will explore the impact of the renovation at an individual member level and the steps we can take to mitigate that interruption.
Members will also have ample opportunity to ask questions to those presenting who will include our Captain, Meredith Ramadan, Chairman, Andrew Davis, and CEO, Matt Corby. We are also happy to take questions in advance to address during the presentation (please submit questions via this form).
Please RSVP your interest in attending to Laura Tuffy – laura.tuffy@nationalgolf.com.au by Monday 24 April.
National Senior Masters
The National Senior Masters will be played across Tuesday to Thursday of this week, April 18-20, pitting 140 of the country’s leading 55 and over players against each other in stroke play across the three Cape Schanck courses.
The event has been fortunate enough to secure Golf Australia CEO, James Sutherland, as the key-note speaker at the Wednesday night dinner.
Last year’s event was won by Gregory Rhodes from Coomealla GC with a score of 225 for his three rounds – 9 over par – just managing to edge out National member Gary Graco, who finished 1 shot off the pace.
Important MiScore Updates
MiScore – Important Change from Monday 17 April
MiClub has written to all clubs to indicate that a number of aged devices will become incompatible with its MiScore software from Monday 17 April due to upgrades to the latest Apple/Google operating systems. The minimum requirement is iOS 13 for iOS and Android 8.0 for Android. Please note that this is expected to affect less than 2% of users.
A number of older versions of mobile phones – typically 7+ years of age – will become obsolete and will no longer be capable of receiving operating system updates. As a result, access to the MiScore App will become restricted or blocked. The following is a list of devices that will no longer be compatible from that date:
Apple Devices (unable to update to iOS 13):
Android devices (unable to update to Android 8.0):
Any member or guest using one of the devices listed above will either need to obtain another device which meets minimum requirements or obtain a paper scorecard for competition scoring. Any questions can be directed to MiClub through email, support@miclub.com.au or by phone on 08-9444-5300.
NOTE: Anyone with a paid subscription for MiScore can cancel their subscription via the App store subscription management area if they decide not to continue using MiScore. .
Change to COVID19 Rules
Golf Australia has recently advised the removal of COVID19 Rules will conclude by the end of April 2023. This will affect clubs currently using the self-score submission method. Clubs already using the player's marker recording method will incur no change.
To comply with these requirements the MiScore App will be amended to have the player's marker record the scores and submit on conclusion. This will include capturing both player and markers signatures prior to score submission.
Once implemented, pairings with both players scoring via the App will record each other's score, sign and submit. If only one player in the pair is using the App, the App user will need to provide a physical scorecard to their marker.
MiClub will action this change to the MiScore App between 24 and 28 April, which will be applied in an update to the system during the evening so it won’t affect daily competitions. This will ensure achievement of the deadline of 1 May 2023 as per notice from Golf Australia.
Golf Barons - The National Journey
Members will recall the GolfBarons visiting earlier in the year to capture the amazing courses at Cape Schanck. We are excited to announce that ‘The National Journey’ can now be streamed On Demand on 9NOW.
We encourage you to tune in for a laugh with the GolfBarons and see the beauty of our magnificent courses, all from the comfort of your own home - trust us, this is an episode you don’t want to miss!!
The National Associate Pro-Am
Win 1 of 2 Full Sets of Titleist Clubs + Titleist Bag
Many of our members will be familiar with the smiling face of resident PGA trainee, Sheradyn Johnson. Away from the pro-shop, Sheradyn is a highly accomplished PGA Associate, having won five events on the 2022 Associate Schedule, and making the cut in the most recent Australian Open. In 2022, Sheradyn was announced as the PGA Trainee of the Year and took out the Victorian Associate Order of Merit.
In conjunction with her traineeship, one of Sheradyn’s requirements is to coordinate and manage a professional match or Pro-Am event, and she has chosen the latter. The Pro-Am, to be held on the Moonah Course, will bring together a field of 108 players, comprising 60 professionals and 48 amateurs on Monday 15 May at 8.30am (shotgun start).
To fund the minimum prizemoney for that event, the Club will raffle two sets of Titleist clubs and bags, each with a retail value of $5,000, to be won by two lucky members. Only 150 tickets will go on sale at $100 each. By purchasing a ticket, you will not only be demonstrating your support for our PGA professionals, but also for one of our highly valued members of staff.
Tickets can be purchased by entering on the timesheet labelled PGA RAFFLE ENTRY located on the May 15 timesheet
Members who are interested in securing a spot in the Pro-Am should do so by registering via the timesheet labelled PGA PRO-AM AMATEUR BALLOT SHEET located on the May 15 timesheet
Both the above sheets will open for members on Tuesday 18 April at 8pm
Please note that there is likely to be a ballot for successful places in the Pro-Am. Those who win a place will be notified on Friday 5 May.

Congratulations to The National Bridge Club which recently finished third in the Southern Peninsula Bridge Challenge.
The top team of the day also featured National Bridge Club players Karen Snow, Yvonne Goldbloom, Helen Lieberman and Pauline Wrobel.
Member Booking Expectations
In our efforts to support better access to the Saturday morning timesheet for members, as well as other busy times, the Club will continue to review the extent to which bookings are being made with consideration for other members.
Late cancellations, most particularly when the Club is not notified, or late shifts of players on the timesheet are inconsiderate at best and often result in a member (who is acting faithfully) being stranded.
Our ambition is for all members take responsibility for their own activity in this regard, rather than the Club having to manage repeated instances of thoughtless booking activity with individuals directly.
Farewell - Barry Francis
The Club wishes to advise that Barry Francis will be resigning from his role at The National after over 10 years of exceptional service.
Barry, a much-loved staff member and friendly face to our members, has decided to step away from his role to spend more time with his wife and family.
Barry has very kindly put together a list of special thanks to a number of members that he has connected with over the years.
To view his well-wishes, please follow this link
We would like to wish Barry and his family all the very best for the future.

2023 Tony Limon Putting Challenge
On Saturday 11 March 2023 the finals of The Tony Limon Putting Challenge were played in sunny but windy conditions.
All matches went down to the final holes with the final played over 18 holes between John Wheeler and Richard Homberger.
John Wheeler was very steady being 1 up throughout the match but Richard Homberger proved too strong, holing a very challenging downhill left to right putt to keep the match alive, and then proceeded to win on the 20th hole.
Congratulations to the 2023 Tony Limon Putting Challenge winner, Richard Homberger.
Doris Chambers Cup
The 2023 Doris Chambers Cup qualifying round was played on the Long Island Course on 15 March. The Doris Chambers Cup is a Golf Australia event played in an 18 hole foursomes stableford format, with the top qualifying team progressing onto the state finals. Jodi Micari and Merryn Graer won with an impressive 42 points in ideal conditions.
Good luck to Jodi and Merryn in the state final!
L.A Browne Foursomes
In hot blustery conditions the annual L.A Browne foursomes event was held at Long Island on Saturday 18 March. With the conditions threatening low scores, consistency was key and proved the difference in the end for the winning pair.
Congratulations to Dung Nguyen and Hak Kouch with a nett score of 149 (74,75), finishing one stroke clear of last year’s winners Tony Mann & Mark Pratt nett 150 (76.5,73.5).

The irrigation design has been finalised for Long Island and will go out to tender in the next couple of weeks
The design has two separate pumping stations, one for the greens and one for the couch surfaces . This will allow us to irrigate the greens with either potable water or bore water . The fairways irrigation is a hard edge design, this means no water will be applied to the roughs . This will provide definition and avoid water wastage

Coaches Corner
Indoor Simulator
The indoor simulator at Long Island is now in full swing, with many members already taking the opportunity to use it for coaching, club fitting and providing some really informative data.
We have also had a number of members who have gone through the bag-mapping process, providing them with an average carry and total distance for each of their clubs as well as the relative shot dispersion and common miss for each club, which can be caused by incorrect club setup or swing fault.
If you'd like to learn more or book a session on the simulator, we encourage you to reach out to Tim at tim.stone@nationalgolf.com.au or Andrew at andrew.kloprogge@nationalgolf.com.au

Tip of the Month
with Nick O'Hern
We are back again with a fantastic tip from former European and PGA Tour player Nick O'Hern.
Nick filmed this whilst playing in The National Tournament Pro-Am. With the infamous Cape Schanck breeze featuring in the video the audio can be a bit tricky to pick up at times, so here are a few helpful pointers below for the 3/4 knockdown shot.
