Long Island Update

Planning and Project Update

The start date for the Long Island renovation is fast-approaching, and most recently the Club took another important and positive step towards breaking ground and beginning the project. Recently, both Frankston City Council and the Club wrote to the neighbouring residences, and there has been no objection to the project.

Alternative Course Access For Impacted Members

Arrangements for alternate playing access for impacted members are currently being finalised. Once these are in place, we will advise members via website, email and social media.

Keeping Up With The Project

The Club will keep members up-to-date with the project regularly through website and social media updates. To share what you are most interested in being kept up-to-date with please follow this link.

Boneo Road Development - The Ranch

Members may have heard about a planning submission currently underway regarding a redevelopment at The Ranch, which is approximately 3km north of the Cape Schanck Clubhouse , located at 810 Boneo Road.

The Club does not believe there are any issues arising from this development that will impact the members or their experience playing at Cape Schanck.

We have written to the council to ensure that the full formal process takes place and requested that council take into consideration the impact on the environment in terms of noise, sound and light pollution as a result of the project and its potential impacts.

Further details about the project can be found by following this link

Hole In One Insurance

In the February edition of Through The Green the Club highlighted the added benefit of receiving a $300 payment for recording an ace as a result of the insurance options at the time.

Due to a change in the insurance offered to members, effective from July 1, 2023, this is no longer an option.

To read more about the changes to insurance for members, please visit the following update.

Reciprocal Arrangements – Royal Sydney and The Lakes

Members are advised of changes to the reciprocal arrangements at Royal Sydney Golf Club and The Lakes Golf Club.

Royal Sydney GC

Reciprocal access will not be possible on the Championship Course from 1 January 2024 until approximately March 2025 due to the re-design of the Championship Course by Gil Hanse.

Members will still have reciprocal access to the Club’s 9-hole Centenary Course, practice facilities and all other sporting and Clubhouse areas.

A letter from Royal Sydney GC General Manager, Michael Solomons can be accessed here.

The Lakes GC

The Lakes GC will be hosting the Australian Open from Thursday 30 November to Friday 1 December. As a result, course and clubhouse access will not be available from Monday 6 November through to Sunday 10 December.

Congratulations to David and Ben on winning the 2023 Winter Cup with a final score of 2&1.

David Inglis Captain's Trophy

The 36-hole final of the David Inglis Captain’s Trophy was played on Sunday 18 June on The Old course between Mitchell Francis and Mardi Scott. Congratulations to Mitchell on his outstanding performance winning 10&8.

Mr David Inglis is acknowledged as the founder of the Club and first club captain. Mr Inglis is also recognised for registering The National Golf Club name in 1984.

Liam Reaper In Hot Form

Liam Reaper is no stranger to our members, as an essential part of our Golf Operations team at Long Island. As a part of his journey as a PGA Associate, Liam competes regularly in a number of events both locally and interstate and has been in incredible form, winning his last three events, which include:

  • PGA Associate Junior at Tocumwal GC, where Liam won by 1 stroke with a score of -6.
  • Kooringal PGA Open where Liam won by 1 stroke with a score of -1
  • The National Long Island PGA Open, where Liam finished tied for 1st.

The talent from our National Associates doesn’t stop there. Sheradyn Johnson finished T6, T6 and T4 in each of these respective events after taking out the Latrobe PGA Associate event (alongside Liam) earlier in the year. Both Liam and Sheradyn are at the pointy end of the Order of Merit, with Liam in 3rd position and Sheradyn in 4th.

Fuyu Yang Triumphs In World Stars Event

Our very own Fuyu Yang is a world champion!

Fuyu recently won the 2023 World Stars event in Las Vegas. Competing in the 9-10 girls, Fuyu carded an impressive -5 to finish four shots clear of second.

Fuyu and another of our bright young stars, Molly McLean, have recently been competing in the US in a number of Junior tournaments.

We are pleased to announce a donation of $250 to Pet Rescue, an organisation that connects pets without a home, with people who are looking to adopt a pet.

Join us for the next K9 & Dine event on Sunday 12 November

Winners - Women's Winter Matchplay

On Monday 17 July, a wonderful crisp and sunny winter’s day at Yarra Yarra Golf Club, The National won the Victorian Women's Interclub Winter Matchplay (Section A). The team took out the competition and the Silver Salver with a 4-1 win over Southern, finishing on top of the ladder by half a point to Yarra Yarra. This is the club's fourth win in the last eight years of The National competing, with the first event being played in 1969 (not played 2020/2021). Click here for results.

Congratulations and well done to all the players, caddies, supporters and team manager.

Due to a number of factors, namely overlap with GPV Peninsula Matchplay, illness and holidays, the squad was a large playing group to be able to field a team each week in the early rounds. Over the six-match competition the team became more cohesive during the second half with consistent players and caddies each week, and the team spirit, especially in the last two weeks, was exceptional.

In the end, being matchplay, every shot really did count as Yarra Yarra had been on top of the ladder for the whole season and with NGC hosting the first round, we always seemed to be behind. However, with some steady golf and a nail-biting tie with Cheltenham, this kept us in the race for our last match. Coming into the final round, Yarra were on top of the ladder but hosting, The National was second by half a point, clear of Metropolitan and Commonwealth who were playing each other. The win could have gone to any of the top four teams.

The final round was a very close and exciting contest. Joanne Dinsdale and Jackie Tracy both won comfortably, Magda Cotton went to seventeen and Di Otter and Glenda McIntyre battled to win on the eighteenth, to secure the premiership for The National. The team showed such spirit, determination, and camaraderie.

A big thank you to the amazing non-playing caddies, who each week, freely shared their expertise and time with the team. You are all a great encouragement and inspiration to the Team. Special mention to our Senior Caddie Master, Jann Higgs once again, for being with us all the way.

Players: Magda Cotton, Joanne Dinsdale, Kimberley Gibson, Melissa Glenn, Danni Gobbo, Susan Hughes, Glenda McIntyre, Ros Nicol, Cate Noonan, Di Otter, Fiona Pratt, Katie Stewart, Deidre Stockdale, and Jackie Tracy.

Non-playing caddies: Jann Higgs, Gayton Menzel and Michelle Pragt.

The Club would like to extend a special thank you to team manager, Sue Macmillan for giving up her time to ensure matchday runs smoothly.

Your exceptional organization and leadership was critical to the team’s success.

Course News

Bob Harrison Visit

Members would be aware that, as a part of our ongoing strategy of improving the courses, the Club arranges for the designers or representatives of the respective course designers to attend on a regular basis (every 4-5 years).

Bob Harrison will be visiting next week to begin works on the 17th green of Moonah (further details below). Whilst Bob is here, he will also be discussing the black tees, with consideration of adding some length to a handful of holes. Interestingly, Elvis Smylie, who broke the course record with a 63 on day two of The National Tournament, averaged 117m approach shots into the Par 4s on the Moonah course.

Moonah 17th Green

Works will commence on the 17th green starting Monday 24 July and a temporary green will be in play at the start of the 17th fescue approach.

The aim is to have the green open for play for the Monthly Medal in September.

A timeline of the works program is below, with the plans below this.

Week One

  • Greens turf sod cut and placed to the side to be relayed at a later date
  • Thatch removed
  • Sand carted in to raise the RHS of the green and surrounds
  • Bob Harrison on site to supervise the shaping

Week Two

  • Final shaping undertaken
  • Greens turf relayed

Week Three

  • Surrounds turf laid

4th Hole of The Old

The works to restore the bank on the 4th hole of The Old Course continue to progress. Whilst the works are complete, the water level will remain low until the roots take hold. Additionally, the lower water level will also allow the team to focus on controlling the reeds, to improve the aesthetics of the lake.

Works on the blue tee on the 4th were originally scheduled to take place during spring, however, the team has taken advantage of the hole closure and pushed these works forward. The blue tee has been levelled and extended towards the front and to the right hand side. New turf will be laid in the coming weeks.

The 4th hole is expected to open for play in early August, with the upgraded blue tee opening in September.

Welcome To The Team

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our two latest additions to the ground staff team at Long Island, our dump trucks, Norm and Bessie.

After a couple of months of onboarding, Norm and Bessie will be busy getting to work once the Long Island renovation takes place in September.

Macdonald Bags

Step back in time and get your hands on these classic carry bags. With only two available, these bags are made of high-quality materials and handcrafted in the USA from American and European hides.

The Classic ($1450) features a triangular carbon-fibre top with three sections; a centre-ground carbon fibre supporting rod down the middle of the bag creating the most ergonomic structure to carry; and features the most comfortable shoulder strap you will ever experience.

The Wanderer ($1150) is a take on the traditional Sunday Bag. These were bags designed to carry 7 or 8 clubs and a bunch of balls, so that you could wander around the course on a lazy Sunday afternoon getting some practice in. The Wanderer is a single-pocket golf bag. Other than its carbon fibre triangular top, it has limited structure. It’s lightweight, and is designed to be easy to carry.

New MGI Buggy

The new MGI Ai Navigator GPS+ is designed with an integrated GPS system built into a super responsive high-resolution 4” full-colour all-weather touchscreen display.
